Year 11 pupil from William Edwards School's essay has been published in ‘The Scholar’

We are celebrating a remarkable achievement at William Edwards School, with Year 11 pupil Hanna’s essay being published in ‘The Scholar’, the annual academic journal of The Brilliant Club.

Hanna’s essay titled "How Can Sport Be Seen as a Political Act?" explores the intersection of sports and politics, examining how nationalism, social inequalities, and the perception of meritocracy can transform sporting events into political statements.

This remarkable achievement highlights Hanna’s exceptional academic prowess and dedication to exploring subjects beyond the standard curriculum.

The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme, which Hanna successfully completed last year, offers pupils the unique opportunity to experience university-style tutorials led by PhD tutors. Participants also engage in university events, including insightful Q&A sessions with student ambassadors. These experiences are designed to cultivate essential academic skills and foster ambitions for higher education.

The letter we received from The Brilliant Club praised Hanna's hard work and the high quality of her final assignment: "We are impressed by their hard work, including submitting challenging final assignments for which they received university-style grades and certificates." The programme aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and ambition necessary to secure places at competitive universities, should they choose to pursue that path.

‘The Scholar’ is a publication that showcases the excellence work of Brilliant Club pupils across the UK, recognising their dedication and introducing them to the process of research and publication. The competition for inclusion in the journal is fierce, with an expert panel of PhD tutors reviewing numerous excellent assignments before making their final selections.

Simon Bell, Headteacher at William Edwards School said: “We are absolutely thrilled for Hanna. Earning publication in ‘The Scholar’ is a testament to her academic curiosity and perseverance. The Brilliant Club provides a great opportunity for our pupils to explore their intellectual passions beyond the curriculum, and Hanna has excelled.”

“This achievement reflects her hard work and our school’s commitment to embedding a love of learning in pupils. Hanna’s work was marked and moderated using university grades, and she had the chance to speak with current undergraduates – getting to experience a taste of full university life.”

Hanna expressed great enthusiasm for the programme, particularly enjoying the opportunity to delve into a topic outside of her regular studies. The accomplishment reflects Hanna’s individual talent and the supportive and enriching environment promoted by William Edwards School. Hanna’s success serves as an inspiration to her peers.
